CSA Introduces Canada's First Safety Management Standard
Sept. 2006

Finally some standardization which you can use in your workplace!

As most of you are aware both OPC Inc and OPM Inc are advocates of the use of ergonomic & medical guidelines and standards in order to ensure both your ergonomic processes and return to work processes are objective and fair.  To this end we have been using and testing the Ministry of Labour for ontario and our own OPC Ergonomic Guidelines in all of our client workplaces for ergonomics.  As well OPM Inc only refers to and uses medical and rehabilitation based guidelines.

A tool that is going to assist you further in the overall development of your health, safety, ergonomic, absence and disability management programs is now available through the Canadian Standards Associating. The Canadian Standards Association has just introduced Canada's first consensus-based occupational health and safety management standard, called CSA Z1000-06. This new standard is designed to help organizations reduce or prevent Canada's current number of injuries, illnesses and fatalities by providing you with a model for developing and implementing your global Occupational Health and Safety management system.

The management system standard, encourages a more systematic approach to meeting your defined health, safety, ergonomic (by adapting the CSA Standard with the OPC Ergonomic Audit – see Products Page) objectives. Similar to the OPC & OPM models the CSA Standard uses a four-step approach of;

Plan - Audit

DO- Put into place

Check and measure

Act – ensure everyone is compliant and the culture is in place for this to occur

The CSA Standard will assist you to manage both preventive and protective measures, emergency preparedness, training, procurement issues, documentation, legal and other safety-related requirements. The CSA Standard is designed to ensure your employees are involved in the operation of the management systems.

The CSA Standard is compatible with other management system standards and guidelines such as the OPC Ergo Guidelines; ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 series as well as the CSA Office Ergonomic Standards which have been published since 2000.

The standard includes extensive guidance material and is available in hardcopy; PDF electronic format & CD-ROM. For more information visit: www.csa.ca.  To ensure this standard is compatible with your Ergonomic and Absence and Disability Management Programs click to the Products Page of this website to purchase the Ergonomic Program Audit and Absence/Disability Management Audit.
